Brimbank Men’s Shed

The Brimbank Men’s Shed was established in 2006 following a community forum and a community consultation process,
which determined the need for the service. A small truck shed was converted into a meeting space at the Lentara Sunshine Mission site and the Lentara Brimbank Men’s Shed commenced operation.

Since this time the Brimbank Men’s Shed has established three programs. The General Gathering is our most popular program, with up to 30 men attending each week to participate in a social gathering, with no tools used. The Community Projects Program involves wood work to create items that support the local community, and the Asylum Seeker’s Program offers a place for new arrivals to practice their English and social skills.

Over 300 men have participated in the Brimbank Men’s Shed program since 2006 with over 70 men currently accessing the shed.

Most of these men experience one or more of the following issues:
• Depression and suicidal ideation
• Poor physical health including obesity and diabetes
• Significant relationship breakdown, loneliness & isolation
• Homelessness
• Alcohol or other Drug and/or gambling issues
• Limited literacy and numeracy proficiency
• Settlement issues
• Significant physical injuries and disability
• Primary carer of their partner

What the Men’s Shed Program needs most!
The Brimbank Men’s Shed is widely recognised within the sector as taking an innovative approach to supporting men and is different from many sheds in terms of participant needs, which are largely related to mental health issues.
